May 9th has been "officially" recognized as Goku Day.
Anime News Network reports, "The Japan Anniversary Association has "officially" recognized May 9 as Goku Day. The numbers 5 and 9 can be read in Japanese as "Go" and "Ku" respectively. Film distributor Toei had applied to the association to have the day recognized as Goku Day." Read more about it here.
What does this mean for us, the fans, who have been lovingly celebrating May 9th as Piccolo Day in accordance to the Great Demon Lord Piccolo's wishes?
Once again, the two old rivals have stepped up to claim the same honor. And once again, Son Goku is the winner. Although Piccolo Day is both Piccolo Daimao's holiday and Piccolo Jr's birthday, Goku's name looks kind of like the letters 5 and 9, so it is only fair that Piccolo relinquish his holiday to Goku.
After all, it's pretty cool to have Goku Day as an official day to join the likes of Queen Day, Star Wars Day, and Karinto Day (which I can only assume is about cats living in towers). So sit back, relax, and enjoy the last Piccolo Day... but the first Goku Day!!
