In October of 1990, the Freeza Saga was in the middle of airing for the first time on Fuji TV. On October 17th, between Dragon Ball Z episodes 63 and 64, aired an hour long Dragon Ball Z TV Special... the first on its kind, entitled Dragon Ball Z: A Final Solitary Battle ~The Z Warrior Kakarotto's Father Challenges Freeza~. As the title suggests, the special focuses around Son Goku's biological father, Bardock, and his final, lonely battle against Freeza. Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama didn't contribute story or characters to the special (other than those characters taken from the original manga, like Freeza, Dodora, Vegeta, etc), but he did redesign and rename Bardock's crew based on character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru's original work.

Left to right: Nakatsuru's original designs for Bardock Co., Toriyama's redesign of Bardock, Toriyama's redesign of Bardock Co.

Toriyama, however, liked the TV Special so much that he included Bardock into the original manga, despite him not truly being his character.

What we see in Dragon Ball chapter 307 is a flash back to the TV Special itself, showing Bardock's final, one-man-stand against Freeza and another panel of Bardock being vaporized by Freeza along with Planet Vegeta. All the while, Freeza thinks to himself how this Son Goku looks so much like that last Saiyan who defied him. This moment was then adapted back into the anime with Dragon Ball Z episode 86

So that's Bardock. That's how he was conceived and that's how he became considered "canon" to even the manga's storyline, despite appearing originally in the anime.

This is a completely different story about Bardock.

This is Bardock. He's a Saiyan Warrior from the Planet Vegeta. He's a grouchy sourpuss who never seems to smile about anything, except when he's with his lady love.

This is Gine, Bardock's wife! She's never upset or down and her favorite hobby is skipping through roses while farting sunshine. Her and Bardock are total opposites, but you can see how opposites attract! Together they have two sons - the child warrior Raditz, and the adorable tube baby Kakarotto!

And this is Bardock's best pal, Beets... or Cabbage... or Beans. He and Bardock work together for the evil galactic gangster, Freeza! They get into all kinds of trouble exterminating entire planetary civilizations together. Don't even ask about that time on Rygal 7! (The weaponry was radical.) He and Bardock don't always get along, but what's most important at the end of the day is that they're friends and he has no emotional depth or characterization beyond being Bardock's friend, and is not Toma.

One day, Beets and Bardock are out blasting some silly aliens to death on a world that belongs to them and not Freeza, for the express purpose of giving it to Freeza, when Beans gets a message on his Scouter.

Cabbage: "Hey bro, Freeza wants every Saiyan to report back to Planet Vegeta at once."
Bardock: "I do not like nor trust Freeza despite willfully murdering for him on a daily basis, and I can see that this is a very obvious trap yet one that I am going to go along with."
Cabbage: "Ah, Bardock, you crack me up."

Back to Planet Vegeta Bardock and Sweet Potato go, where they arrive to a bustling city with most of the Saiyans having returned already.

Parsnip Vinny: "Hey yo, Baddack, welcome back. Seems Freeza wants us all on the planet for some reason, but it's probably nothing suspicious despite the fact that none of us like nor trust him."
Bardock: "It kinda seems like he plans to keep us here until everyone reports in, then murder us."
Parsnip Vinny: "Ah yo, Baddack, you crack me up."

Meanwhile, in Freeza's Spaceship, which lumbers ominously and obviously in the Planet Vegeta sky.

Freeza: "Now that I've ordered all the Saiyans to return to their planet, I'm going to wait exactly one month for them all to arrive. I'm not going to be secret about it, though. Instead I am going to park my spaceship within their night's sky for what is surely 30 days while they grow increasingly suspicious of my motives due to my silence. Then when they most expect it, I'm going to blow up their world and say a comet did it. Because um... Super Saiyans or something."

Orin: "With all due respect, Freeza-sama, your plan sounds like it was written by a barely functioning and heavily drugged orangutang at best, and at worst by an author well past his prime and memory that a goldfish would look down on."
Freeza: "Fuck off, Orin."

Back on Planet Vegeta, Bardock meets up with his wife Gine to discuss the fate of their two sons.

Bardock: "I know we've been growing our child in this tube for three years, but I think we should pull him out tonight, even though he's never been exposed to the world before despite being three years old, and put him in a space pod and send him to a faraway planet."
Gine: "But why, Snufflelumpkin?"
Bardock: "Because I'm pretty sure Freeza's going to kill us all."
Gine: "Why would Freeza do that? I know none of us like nor trust him, and he feels the same toward us, and that he's been hanging in our sky for weeks and hasn't told us a single thing since telling us all to report back to Planet Vegeta but... aren't you being a little unreasonable?"
Bardock: "... Is... Is everyone stupid?"
Gine: "Ah, Bardock, you crack me up."

That night, Bardock and Gine take their son Kakarotto out of the incubation tube, put him in a space pod, and carry him out of town so they can launch him into space.

Gine: "But if you think Freeza is going to kill us, why don't we escape with Kakarotto, find Raditz, and go to some far off star system as a family?"
Bardock: "Can't, Freeza will just track us on our Scouters."
Gine: "But he can't track our spacepods? Why not just leave the scouters?"
Bardock: "Gine, we can't leave our scouters. How else are we going to debate Battle Powers?"

Orin: "Oh, I get it. Everyone is an idiot in this story."

With that, Bardock and Gine send Kakarotto to the faraway Planet Earth...

Bardock: "Live as one of them, Kakarotto, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. But always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kakarotto, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son. Well, my only other son."

Elsewhere, in space...

Raditz: "Hey, Vegeta, shouldn't we be getting back to Planet You? Freeza signaled us weeks ago..."
Vegeta: "Are you kidding? Freeza is definitely going to kill everyone."

At length, Freeza's month of waiting comes to an end, and he readies himself to destroy the Planet Vegeta. As the galactic tyrant emerges from his spaceship hovering over the Saiyan's homeworld, a single Saiyan Warrior is there to greet him. Bardock.

Bardock: "Looks like I outsmarted you, Freeza! I've known for a whole month you'd attack us."
Freeza: "Yet with all several thousand Saiyans together and a month to prepare, you didn't think to raise an army against me. You just came by yourself. And are bloody for some reason."
Bardock: "..."
Freeza: "Ah, Bardock, you crack me up!"
