Six long months have passed since Son Gohan was left out in the wilderness by Piccolo, in preparation for the on-coming Saiyan invasion. Then, Gohan was a four-year-old crybaby without an ounce of toughness in him, but brimming with the potential to be a powerful warrior. Now, he's a five-year-old badass with a rad 80s anime mullet who doesn't give a fuck.
Gohan does his morning routine of fetching himself some breakfast by basically living out every kid's fantasy. (Starting your day by sliding down something that you finish by kicking down your breakfast of whatever-the-fuck-you-want.) And as he munches, a familiar foe stops by for the customary part of every Gohan breakfast.
The Pee-Rex.
"So..."
"... it begins."
Meanwhile, atop Kami's Temple in the Heavenly Realm...
Kuririn, Yamcha, Yajirobe, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu have assembled to receive the same training Son Goku was given by Kami-sama before his fight with Piccolo at the 23rd Tenka-ichi Budokai. But in order to best the Saiyans, all five of them will have to surpass even Goku's strength! (
As to why the other two strongest people on Earth weren't recruited - that being fellow 23rd Budokai attendees Chichi and Tao Pai Pai - the author had this to say.
"Who?"
At the same time in the Next World, Goku has been running along the Serpentine Road for months. He's hungry, he's tired, and he's no where near strong enough to take on the Saiyans whose arrival Earth is imminent. But finally, at long last, he's reached the end.
... only... there's nothing there.
That is, until he looks up, and sees a small Planetoid hanging in the sky.
That must be where Kaio-sama lives...!!!
(... and um, cut the music.)
"Fuck."
Goku excitedly jumps to the tiny world but is almost immediately pulled crashing down onto it! He struggles against an incredible force that he can neither see nor feel nor hear, but is nevertheless keeping him stuck to the ground. A mighty, invisible force, several times stronger than even Goku, the Strongest Man Under the Heavens.
"And how."
Then as Goku crawls into a crouched position, he meets a monkey. Never one to judge a master by his looks, especially since a cat once helped him defeat a slug man, Goku assumes this monkey is the great Kaio-sama.
The monkey begins to move in a strange way.
Goku, thinking this is his training, follows suit.
"Always awkward when someone catches you playing with your monkey."
Introducing Kaio-sama: Lord of the Galaxy, and your dad.
The monkey is just Kaio's buddy, Bubbles-kun. (He adopted him after Michael Jackson gave him up.)
As a certified lover of all things Dad Joke, Kaio-sama agrees to train Goku, but only if he can make a joke worthy of Kaio-sama's refined sense of humor. Now Goku's training for the last five years, five years spent being a dad, will be what either saves the Earth, or dooms it...
".... I've got.... I've... got.... I've got...!!"
"... I'VE GOT YOUR NOSE!"
"........................!!!"
Kaio-sama agrees to take Son Goku on as his student. In Dad Jokes. Then Goku politely explains he meant martial arts, so, Kaio quickly changes tact and asked Goku to come at him!
(I wish we got to see Kaio-sama throw down. Just once.)
But, Goku can hardly move, much less attack Kaio-sama. Kaio learns that Goku is from Earth, and explains to him that his little planet has an intense gravity that's 10 tens that of Earth's. Goku tells Kaio about the incoming Saiyans, so Kaio, who knows those are some really bad dudes Earth has been noticed by, uses his abilities to see how close they are from Earth.
Kaio-sama figures they've got about 158 days left until the two Saiyans reach Earth. And since both are even stronger than Kaio, Goku won't just have to learn from him, he'll have to surpass him!
... which means chasing Bubbles to get used to the gravity.
Goku struggles at first, but when he takes off his weighted clothing, Goku soars straight for Bubbles! Kaio-sama is impressed that Goku was already so far ahead in his training that he was wearing weighted gi. This one has promise!
Meanwhile, Piccolo has finally come from his own training to see that Gohan hasn't just managed to survive these six months alone, but he's utterly flourished. Now it's time to test this Mini Goku's might against a real opponent, with only 158 days left before the Saiyans arrive.
With half a year already gone, Earth's mightiest heroes double their efforts to protect their planet from the invading Saiyan Warriors!
